Stress

Stress is a response to strain. We need a certain amount of stress to enable us to perform well. However, sometimes too much stress will wear us down.

What are the differences?

Stress

  • is normal
  • is not usually harmful
  • can be positive and performance enhancing

but

  • excessive stress is dysfunctional
  • prolonged stress can be harmful and can accelerate aging

Some of the signs of stress

Thoughts –
Confusion, difficulty making decisions, poor concentration

Feelings
Anger/irritability, fear, depression, guilt, grief, hopelessness

Body Functioning
Dizzy spells, nausea, increased heart rate, chest pain, diarrhoea, trembling

Actions/Behaviours
Changes in behaviour patterns, changes in eating, isolating yourself from others (family/friends/work colleagues), increased dependence on alcohol/drugs

If you find that your life is being ruled by some of these signs, it can be helpful to talk to someone.
